What a pool barrier inspector looks at
The exact measurements and rules depend on the applicable barrier standard in your council letter. The inspection commonly covers the fence or barrier, gates and doors, latches and self-closing action, gaps, climbable objects near the barrier and any boundary barrier that forms part of the enclosure.
Do not rely on a generic online checklist to decide that the barrier complies. A registered practitioner needs to inspect the property and apply the correct standard.
A practical check before the appointment
- Find the City letter. It gives the due date and applicable barrier standard.
- Open and release every gate. Note anything that does not close and latch by itself.
- Clear access to the full barrier. The inspector needs to see fences, gates, doors and boundary sections.
- Move obvious climbable items away. Furniture, pots, toys and stored materials can affect the barrier area.
- Do not make technical assumptions. Ask the inspector before altering a boundary fence, gate or building element.
A self-check is preparation, not certification. Pool Letter Help does not assess photos, decide which standard applies or promise that a barrier will pass.
What happens after the visit
If the barrier complies, the registered practitioner may issue a certificate of pool and spa barrier compliance (Form 23). The owner then lodges it with the City within 30 days of issue and pays the separate City lodgement fee.
If the barrier does not comply, the practitioner should explain the next formal step. Ask for the findings in writing and confirm any reinspection charge before work starts. Serious or unresolved non-compliance can follow a different statutory process, so use the practitioner's written advice and official BPC guidance.

Availability matters when the due date is close. The current pilot accepts Greater Bendigo requests due within 60 days and shows one registered local inspection business before contact details move. Your request is not sent to several businesses.
The provider's published inspection fee is A$200. The City's A$23.90 Form 23 lodgement fee is separate. Confirm current pricing, inclusions and timing with the provider before booking.
